At seven years old, I was diagnosed with dyslexia, bringing confusion and, honestly, a little shame. I had to reshape how I felt about myself and redefine how I would choose to lead my life as a person with a "learning difference". With the help of my family, teachers and instructors, I discovered I could process language; it would just be in a different way and on my own terms.
We have all struggled at some point; through my struggle, I gained a passion and I chose to champion for individuals like myself. My goal is to create spaces for people that foster inclusion, confidence and tools to manage and master the challenges of learning and achieving with dyslexia. My purpose is to raise awareness of this disorder — today, that impact is through small acts of service. Tomorrow, I hope that work expands through my career ambition as an attorney. Carrington Cares #DecodeDyslexia is about negating misperceptions and rethinking how we see people with dyslexia and their capabilities to succeed.
Dyslexia is a learning difference that involves difficulties in reading due to problems identifying speech sounds and learning how they relate to letters and words (decoding).
Dyslexia is defined as a brain-based disorder that is affecting the language processing portion of the brain, however, DOESN'T affect intelligence. Children who have been diagnosed with dyslexia and are also intellectually gifted fall into a special category called 2e or Twice Exceptional. I am one of those individuals — I am TWICE EXCEPTION. Consult with your doctor to determine if you are too.

I had the pleasure of being interviewed by Meghan Packer, the Sunday Morning anchor for Atlanta News First today. During the interview, I was able to raise awareness for many causes and organizations close to my heart. I shared my personal story as someone who was born with the “gift” of dyslexia and how I’ve used my experiences to inspire and motivate other students facing similar learning differences.
Today was an amazing day at Atlanta News First! I am always completely humbled when I’m asked to speak and share my journey as a person born with the “gift” of dyslexia, bring awareness to dyslexia, and dispel the myths associated with it. My goal is to always be a source of inspiration to others and to be an example that your “Difference Doesn’t Define You”. My family has always encouraged me to live my life with purpose and to always be true to myself and I pray I’m fulfilling that statement.
Here is a snippet of my interview on The Big Tigger Morning Show.

15-20% of the world’s population have been diagnosed as dyslexic. This equates to over 30-40 million people in the United States, about 5-6 million in the United Kingdom and 2-3 million in Canada. But, what’s more shocking, most people don't know they are dyslexic or are misdiagnosed.
If you or someone you know thinks you may be dyslexic, visit www.dyslexiaida.org to take a FREE online self-assessment test.
